What Does a Chemical Peel Do?

A chemical peel is a process by which the top layer of the skin is removed using a chemical application. A fresh new skin is formed which is smooth and clear. It is a procedure, which removes the top layer of the skin by creating blisters that will eventually peel off. A chemical peel is used to remove aberrations of the skin. It improves and smoothens the texture of the skin by removing its damaged outer layers. This damage might have been done by strong sunlight, uneven pigmentation, scarring due to accidents, illness or acne, or in the normal ageing process when wrinkles and lines appear.

Chemical peels use different kinds of chemicals to get the desired results. Alphahydroxy acids are used in mild problems. This acid can be used in a procedure, which is quick requiring no hospitalization. The patient does not need sedation or any anesthesia. The acid itself will act like one. The patient can resume normal work soon. If trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is used, the stinging may be stronger. This acid is used to penetrate a deeper part of the skin than in the process which uses AHA. It may take a little longer for recovery.

If phenol is used, the patient might need anesthesia or sedation as it penetrates the deepest part of the skin. The recovery may take a longer time but the result will be excellent. The exact chemical used will be decided according to the patient’s needs and the problems. A chemical peel can be done along with a face-lift but it is not a substitute for it. It will neither prevent ageing nor slow it.
Chemical peels are usually done for cosmetic reasons such as to enhance the looks and the appearance and to restore self-confidence.

A chemical peel works by blistering the skin and removing the scabs. A new skin is formed in its place which has none of the problems the original skin had. The procedure itself does not last long, just an hour or two depending upon the area to be treated. Sometimes the acid used may sting the patient or make her irritated. It is removed within a few minutes by washing with water. A cream or a gel or Vaseline is applied to keep the skin from forming scabs soon. If there is any swelling or oozing or redness, medicines can cure them. Within a few days the skin will be glowing and fresh, rejuvenated and scar free. The patient will be able to resume normal duties and go back to work.
