How Do I Prepare For Collagen Injections?

There is not much preparation needed for collagen injections. One has to be mentally prepared for it and have realistic views. There is no point in expecting a miracle and then feeling disappointed. Instead one should discus with the doctor and find out exactly what to expect. This way the patient will not feel cheated or disappointed.

Collagen fills up the wrinkles, the lines and the bands left behind loosely by the depletion of natural collagen. Old age results in the depletion of collagen, which are found everywhere in the body, under the skin, in the bones, in the ligaments and in other places. These can be replaced by collagen treatment where bovine collagen is collected from specially bred cows. They are injected at the problem site to remove the problems. The human body accepts bovine collagen, as it is quite alike in consistency, appearance and configuration to humans.

But still one has to be prepared for any side effects or undesirable happenings. This can be due to some allergy (which should be tested well in advance to avoid such a situation). Or there may be some edema or tenderness or dryness or irritation. The patient should be told that all this might or might not happen but he has to know about it and be prepared for it. There may be red pinpricks at the site of the injection or there may be an abscess (rarely) or infection. He should be mentally and physically prepared for this so that he is not shocked if it happens.

In most cases the treatment is smooth and without any problems or side effects. The results are visible in a day or two and the patient can see for himself without an outsider remarking upon the appearance of the patient. The skin at the proposed treatment site should be clean and should be hygienic. Otherwise chances of bacterial infection are there. Bacterial infection can be cured by antibiotics but there may remain some mark or scarring which may be very faint and disappear after some time.

Collagen injections do not cause pain. The entire procedure takes place within half an hour to an hour after which the patient can go back home. He should rest, not rub or touch the site, nor should he move that part of the body for fear of the collagen spreading to other places and giving a lopsided look.
