Upper Lip Reduction

Perfect lips are a person’s ideals. A cupid’s bow or beautifully sculpted lips are a delight. To some extent too heavy lips can be made to look thinner, and too thin lips can be made to look fuller by experts using lipsticks and cosmetics. There are no other ways than surgery to change the appearance and structure of one’s lips.

Heredity of facial features may be the cause of heavy and ungainly lips, which can be brought back into form by surgery. Sometimes only the upper lip or the lower lips are heavy, sometimes both. In most cases however, it is the thin lip which causes problems, and doctors are asked to perform augmentation surgery to make the lips look fuller. The upper lip reduction is performed by plastic surgeons. The patient may want to go in for upper lip reduction if he finds it difficult to eat or talk or if his teeth are hidden by the heavy upper lip causing him to have a toothless look. Mainly it is done for cosmetic reasons.

The patient has to be sure what he wants. He should discus with a reliable, experienced Board certified doctor about his problems, his desires and his expectations. He should have realistic expectations as any surgery can go awry and result in worse condition than before. After all his doubts are cleared and the stage is set for the upper lip surgery, he has to stop smoking, do away with unnecessary medications, and be in perfect health and mental condition. On the day of the surgery, the surgeon may want a full physical to be done and also a blood test to check the level of red blood cells and the white blood cells.

The surgery itself is short, lasting for about half an hour.  Local anesthesia or a light sleep inducing medication will be given. The patient is fitted with wires to monitor his body condition and he is wheeled into the surgery room. Small incisions on the inside of the upper lip are made, the extra fat or tissues are removed carefully and the wound stitched into place. The stitches may be removed after about a week or so.

The patient can go home but he as to be very careful about his operated lip. He should not tongue the wound, he should not talk too much and his diet has to be monitored and prescribed by the doctor. The wound heals in about a couple of week’s time and he can then go back to regular routine. Once the upper lip has been surgically reduced it will remain like that for years.
