Types of Chemical Peels

The chemical peel procedure comes in many different types. In this procedure, the dead skin cells located on the outermost layer of skin are removed by the means of a bunch of chemicals that have been combined and are placed on the face or any other treatable area. Most of these chemicals used in a chemical peel are derived from various fruits as well as sugar cane and vinegar. Furthermore there may also be vitamins added to the mix to help stimulate growth afterwards.

In the chemical peel process the excessive build-up of dead skin cells leads to a vicious circle of scars that just will not go away. After these dead skin cells are removed the younger, still living skin cells have a chance to grow normally. The chemical peel can help to remove bacteria build-up on the face as well as reverse the side effects associated with sun damage and aging. In general, for the most successful outcome, it is recommended that you undergo several chemical peels in a one month period.

The chemical peel is divided into 3 categories. These categories include the superficial chemical peel which is considered to be the mildest peel available and can be performed on many different skin types. These superficial chemical peels use a diluted glycolic acid but dry ice may also be used. After the superficial chemical peels you then have the medium chemical peels. These medium chemical peels are designed to penetrate deeper into the layers of skin to help remove the dead skin cells. In general Trichloroacetic acid is usually used in this type of chemical peel. The final chemical peel category is the deep chemical peel. This chemical peel is so harsh that it actually causes 2nd degree burns on the patient’s skin. The deep chemical peel is by far the strongest of all chemical peels available and they are only used for the face. These deep chemical peels are usually reserved for those who have years of damage caused by aging and the sun.

The chemical peel procedure can take more than 45 minutes so be warned that if you intend to undergo a deep chemical peel on the face, you will have to endure it the entire time.
