Tummy Tuck Surgery

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is done to improve the appearance of the abdomen, either for cosmetic or health reasons. The surgical procedure is a major one but, as compared to other operations, the risk and discomfort is less.

Before going in for the procedure, research on the operating surgeon and the hospital has to be made; the experience of the operating surgeon has to be considered.  Case studies of the surgeons earlier operations should be found out.  A board certified surgeon should be preferred. The patient should be perfectly satisfied that he has chosen the right surgeon and should have full faith and confidence in him or her. That is half the battle won.

The mode of surgery to be done depends on various factors like health and age, the physical condition of the patient and his mental situation. First of all the main method depends on the reason for the procedure. If the abdominal fat is immense or the loosening of the muscle is more, the tummy tuck surgery is extensive. If the problem is minor, the procedure is comparatively simple. In a normal and traditional abdominoplasty which corrects imperfections both above and below the navel, the operating surgeon takes into consideration the amount of fat to be removed.

The first incision may be made along the bikini line so that the resultant scar is not visible later on. Infinite care is taken to ensure that a minimum incision is made. The incision is horizontal and the surgeon will take adequate care to see that it is within the bathing suit line. Though this may not be possible in all cases. Generally a hip bone to hip bone cut is made first. If the fat can be removed and the muscles tightened through this incision, then the surgeon opts for only one incision.

Otherwise, the belly button is loosened in the next part of the operation, which is later put into place after the procedure. If the necessity for the tummy tuck is above and below the navel, then a second incision is made above the navel. The skin is then gently lowered. Liposuction is used to drain off the fat. The muscles are tightened and all possible care taken to avoid hurting any blood vessel or nerves.

After the operation, the skin is sutured back, either by absorbent stitches or the abdomen may even be stapled gently without hurting the patient. In this case the sutures will be removed after a few days. Endoscopic tummy tuck consists of tightening the abdominal muscles. In this case no skin is removed.
