Tummy Tuck Complications

Abdominoplasty or a tummy tuck procedure is a relatively safe operation. It improves the appearance of the abdomen by removing the ungainly excess fat and tightens the lax muscles. Aging, sudden weight loss, pregnancy and delivery, hysterectomy and other causes may result in the abdomen sagging due to pockets of fat or loose muscles. Surgically this is improved by plastic surgery which regains the lost confidence of the patient and presents him with a better appearance.

Though the operation is a relatively safe one, there are always possibilities of tummy tuck complications, which may be serious, or not. Reaction or allergy to the anesthesia used during the operation can take place. The anesthetist should be consulted beforehand and the method of giving the anesthesia decided. The possibility of the reaction should also be considered. If adequate care is not taken infection may set in. Exposure to infected persons should be scrupulously avoided. Good hygiene, cleanliness, and proper care should be taken to avoid infection.

The skin may become disfigured after the operation though in most cases this disfiguration disappears soon. The scar, which is slight and is not seen in the major number of cases, may not disappear even after a few weeks. The doctor may prescribe some medicine or may suggest another operation to remove it.

There may be swelling which generally goes away soon. There may be redness and tenderness at the area of the operation. Some pain may be there which can be minimized by medication. Fluid retention or fluid collection is generally drained off during the operation. A tube is put inside the wound to drain off the fluid after the patient goes home.

Sometimes bleeding may occur. If it is serious a doctor should be immediately consulted. Sometimes the sutures may rupture if the person has over strained himself or something has collided with the wound. Here again the doctor should be contacted immediately. The belly button or the navel may be displaced or may disappear, giving rise to great concern. Another operation may be suggested in this case.

Reaction to medicines prescribed is another complication of a tummy tuck procedure. Some people take a long time to heal and become normal. It depends on the patient himself but a medical intervention may hasten the process. There may be blood clots after the operation. The patient can minimize this threat by moving slowly after the procedure and not being under bed arrest
