Tummy Tuck Alternatives

Tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a major plastic surgery, which dramatically improves the abdominal profile of the patient. It consists of one or two incisions by an experienced surgeon. These incisions are made at places, which are generally not exposed to the public eye.  Any major surgery leaves behind a scar, however faint, and runs the risks, however minimal, of medicine allergies or side reactions, discomfort or pain, recovery process and total rest for some period. There may also be blood clots or swelling or fluid retention or discharge from the operated area.

A tummy tuck may not be advisable for everyone. Women who plan to get pregnant, or those planning to lose weight, or people who have had other major operations are not advised to go in for abdominoplasty. Such people need an alternative to tummy tuck. Aerobic exercises, abdominal exercises, yoga, strict diet control under medical advice are alternatives to a tummy tuck. But they may take a long time to give the required and desired effects.

Liposuction is the main tummy tuck alternative. This method dissolves the fat accumulated in the body, can be done on an outpatient basis and has no incision to be done. Liposuction results are not as dramatic as tummy tuck’s. But they are effective, especially if fat has gathered in one place and has to be got rid of.

Small perforations are done in the skin during liposuction, which are invisible to the naked eye after the liposuction. The doctor generally makes these perforations at places in the skin directly where fat has accumulated and at places which are not exposed to the public eye. Tubes are inserted and the fat is melted slowly. The melted fat is then extracted and there is hardly any inconvenience, bed rest or post surgery problems. As it is not a surgery, there is no need for anesthesia. No sutures are needed either. Hence total rest is not necessary. However, the sudden loss of fat may make the blood vessels and nerves loose and proper exercise under a doctor’s guidance can take care of the situation.

Liposuction is a fairly safe method of dissolving the fat in the body. The time taken depends on the amount of fat to be disposed of. Generally two to six hours are taken for liposuction during which time the patient may be fully conscious but will not experience any pain. So if you are considering other tummy tuck alternatives and options then you should consider liposuction.
