Liposuction is a surgical procedure by way of which, excess fat can be removed from various parts of the bodies of both men and women. It’s the last alternative when diet regimes and exercising haven’t given the desired effects. It’s also used for contouring the body. Latest technology now provides laser liposuction which is a very safe procedure. Lasers have been used in the medical field for decades. They have been used in dental and reconstructive surgery immensely and are very successful.
Laser liposuction has recently received approval from FDA in 2006. There are two types of lasers that are used. They are used by surgeons in liposcuplture process too. The first one is known as Erchonia Neira 4L. This laser produces a low level cold laser that produces no heat or any sensation. It can be calibrated specifically to liquefy the fat or destabilize the fat inside the patient’s body. During the process the patient has no heat or other sensation.
Then a surgeon would use a cannula to remove the fat cells from the body. This kind of procedure requires minimal invasive surgery. With the laser assisted surgery, the surrounding cells are also less traumatized.
The other procedure is known as the hot laser procedure. It’s also known as ‘SmartLipo’. The Smartlipo procedure uses a cannula that has a laser diode emitter tip. This cannula is then threaded with a 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser fiber, which is then inserted in the designated body area through a small incision. This laser then directs its energy towards the fat cells directly and causes them to rupture. Another benefit of this technique is that the energy dispersed helps the surrounding issue to coagulate. Helping collagen retraction and tissue tightening.
The surgeon is assisted in the operation by the visible red light that shows through the skin and tissue. In this process, the fat isn’t removed by the cannula but rater dissipates through the natural processes of the body.
Another benefit of the laser liposuction over the traditional liposuction surgeries is that it can help tighten the skin of the patient after the surgery has been performed. It can be a boon especially for those who are 50 years and above. Their skin becomes inelastic and sags after the conventional liposuction surgery has been done.
With a carbon dioxide laser, a surgeon performs a tuck whether it’s on the face, neck, abdomen or other areas without leaving a visible scar in that area. The surgeon pulls in the surrounding skin and this eliminates the sagging or drooping of the skin where the liposuction has been performed.
Though the long term effects of laser exposure haven’t been determined, it’s a very safe procedure for liposuction.
