When a girl grows up into a maiden and reaches puberty there are several bodily changes taking place. Besides menstruation and growth of public hair, the waist starts getting a shape and the breasts start developing. These physical changes reach a maturity level by the time a girl reaches the age of eighteen.
However most women are not happy and satisfied with their breasts. They would like to have a perfect 36 or more to be more attractive and get more self confidence. If medicines and exercises fail, ladies opt for surgical methods of enhancing the size of their breasts. The size being dependent on various factors like age, heredity, fat content in the body, they have to be supplemented with external additions of breast implants. The procedure takes just an hour or two and is preferred by thousands of women. In 2006, around 329,000 breast corrective surgeries have taken place in the US.
Breast implants are not new. They have been used in different forms from many years. Paraffin, cotton, wool, even glass and other material have been used for breast implants. By experimentation and elimination, plastic surgeons have used better materials for breast implants and have neared perfection in the art. Silicone has been found to be non resistant, non corrosive and safe to be used as material for breast implants.
A baglike sack is made of thick silicone material and inserted into the breasts via the armpits, or the navel, abdomen, nipples or below the normal breast. Since it is empty at the time of insertion, the incision need not be big and only a few stitches need be used to suture it. Saline or salt water is injected into this sack and the breast is inflated to the desired level. The wound is then sutured. However sometimes saline may leak or the silicone covering may rupture, thus deflating the breasts. The breasts may then have a wrinkled appearance, become smaller and may cause distress. To avoid this, silicone gel is used in the place of saline. This is considered safe and reliable and is being used at present.
The decision of whether to use silicone Vs saline breast implants depends on the patient, her body, her doctor and her confidence level. If she feels that saline may not be suitable for use in the implant, the doctor may go in for silicone gel. And if she feels that saline which can be absorbed by the body in case of a leak or a rupture, and is preferable over silica gel, the doctor may endorse her views.
