Silicone Breast Implants

Breast implants or breast augmentation is done to cosmetically improve the size and shape of the breasts. They may be done after an operation, which has surgically removed a breast, or done by women with sagging breasts due to growing age. Small unnoticeable incisions are made under the breasts or in the armpits or even on the navel to introduce the implant, which enhances the size of the breasts. The procedure takes just an hour or two.

Though implants have been common in the last one or two centuries, the process has been developed and improved over the years. Trials and tests have been done, experimented, discarded and only the improved versions are retained and used for the operations. From paraffin to cotton to wool and other materials have been used for this purpose. This was until silicone and saline were invented to use in these implants and which are now in use.

The first saline filled breast implants are said to have been made in France in 1964. They are implanted surgically in the breasts through comparatively smaller incisions. Thicker room temperature vulcanized shells are made of silicone elastomer and are filled with saline or salt water after the implant is inserted in the breast. Since the implant is empty when introduced, the incision is small. The salt water is then injected into the shell, making the breast bigger.

Saline filled implants are the most common ones used in the US. However the shell may rupture or leak, making the implant unstable and the appearance of the breast wrinkled or rippled. It may be noticeable to the naked eye. However the saline is absorbed in the body and causes no harm.
Today silicone gel is used in place of saline. Silicone gel is thicker and does not leak. Also it is considered superior especially for women who have smaller breasts or if women with breast operations use them. This gel is smoother, thicker and more even so that the appearance of the breast after the augmentation is pleasing and natural.

Today’s implants give the breast an absolutely normal appearance and hence more and more women are opting for it.
