Side Effects of Arm Lift

When exercise can no longer tone our skin because it has already lost its elasticity, the only solution for the sagging upper arm area is brachioplasty or more popularly known as the arm lift. It is a surgical procedure that redefines the under portion of the upper arm, particularly from the underarm area down to the elbow part. By surgically reducing the excess skin and fat between the underarm and the elbow and reshaping your arm for smoother skin and smoother contour, your upper arms becomes more toned and proportionate in appearance. This is the main purpose of an arm lift or brachioplasty. A lot of people have been undergoing this procedure especially those who recently have an excessive weight loss resulting to loose and flabby skin.

All kinds of surgery come with some risks and complications. The same goes with the arm lift surgery. After the surgery, the most noticeable side effect would be the swelling of your incision wounds. You will be required to wear a post operative compression garment to ensure proper healing and to minimize the swelling. Infection can be another complication of arm lift but it can be easily avoided if you follow your doctor’s instructions of your prescription medicines. Bleeding is an unusual side effect and can be easily avoided by not engaging into strenuous activities that may put pressure on your wounds. Avoiding blood thinning medications before you surgery will also prevent you from bleeding.

If you are a smoker, you will be advised to stop smoking three weeks prior and after the surgery because smoking will delay your process of healing. Poor wound healing will result in conspicuous scars that may arise the need for a second operation. Pain and discomfort is a common side effect of every surgery but with proper intake of pain reliever medicines prescribed by your surgeon, everything will be fine. However, if you still experience pain after taking your medicine, you should call your doctor right away.

The inevitable side effects of an arm lift procedure is the scarring of the incisions. Although the scar will fade in time, which usually takes a few months to a year after the procedure, it will still be visible if one will look at the incision areas closely. Some other side effects that are mostly unheard of but still existent are the damage to sensory nerves, the loss of sensation, and some areas of wrinkling or slight depression in the skin.
