When looking over the sclerotherapy consent form there are several important things that you must be prepared for. For starters there are no 100% guarantees that the sclerotherapy treatment of malformed veins will be successful as there are currently no 100% successful remedies to vein malformations. On top of that the fact that both varicose veins as well as spider veins are a reoccurring condition and even a treatment that is successful cannot guarantee that these malformed veins will not reform. The average sclerotherapy procedure patient will have more malformed veins surface within 1 to 6 years following their initial sclerotherapy treatment.
In regards the sclerotherapy treatment of spider veins, the veins will break up into smaller sections following the procedure causing the patient to see spider veins that were not visible before. What this means is that after the sclerotherapy injections the area treated will generally look worse than prior to the injections but these will gradually fade away as the veins die off which may also call for additional treatments as well. These spider vein groupings can be so compact that even after 7 or 10 treatments the most that can be remedied is no more than 90%.
The veins will get hard and lumpy after the procedure as the tissue surrounding the veins turns to scar tissue and the veins die off. These lumps will be very tender and in the case of varicose veins these lumps may be near the injection point while with the spider veins it is possible to get these painful lumps in areas where there were no visible spider veins.
The skin in the region of the injection will turn a brownish pigment following the injection. This brownish colored pigment can take anywhere from 1 month and all the way up to 24 months to fully fade away. In some very rare occasions these brown colored skin pigmentation changes will not fade away at all.
Not only may there be the presence of painful lumps, but in the area of the sclerotherapy injection there may also be numbness. This numbness will generally return within a week or so following the sclerotherapy injections.
The major difference between varicose veins and spider veins in regards to their treatment with a sclerotherapy injection is that there is only a slight chance of scaring with the varicose vein treatments versus the spider vein treatments. The spider veins after being treated with a sclerotherapy inject are reported as having a higher chance of developing scars in the treated area. The risks for this scarring as a result of the sclerotherapy treatment is about 2% of all patients but luckily if caught early enough they can be treated.
As you can see there will be a lot of stuff covered in the sclerotherapy consent form but the best advice is to be prepared well in advance so that you have a better chance of fully understanding the possible side effects associated with the sclerotherapy injections. |
