Scar Revision Cost

The human body produces collagen to protect any wound on it. Too much of collagen may result in a scar. The scar produced may be light or dark; it may be elevated, depressed, puckered, rough and tough or wrinkled and red. It depends on the skin texture, the ability of the body to heal, the surroundings the medicines used and a host of such things. So much so that it is difficult to predict how the body will react to the situation and what type of scar will be formed. Surgery is necessitated when the body has had an accident, an infection, a growth (like cancer) or has been hurt or burnt. Sometimes augmentation also is done through surgery, which can produce a scar.

Scars produced should be allowed to heal and the patient should wait for a year or so at least to see whether the scars heal normally or external forces are needed to improve its appearance. Some scars produce thick, rough and redden the skin. Vitamin E or Scar Guards can be used to remove them. Sometimes cortisone injections are used to lessen the scars. Otherwise a scalpel can be used to remove tough scars after consulting the patient and giving him a local or total anesthesia. Some scar revisions are done on an out patient basis. Once the scar revision is done, fresh sutures will be used to cover the wound. The second scar should normally be lighter and lesser than the first one.

The cost of the scar revision depends on what method is used. If the scar is allowed to improve on its own, naturally it doesn’t cost anything. If Vitamin E or Scar Guard or some such lotions or oils or massage is used, then a couple of hundreds of dollars need be spent. If cortisone injections are used to improve the scars, the cost will be higher. Lasers maybe expensive but they give the best results. Surgery used to improve the scar will cost much more.

If the scar revision is done for cosmetic purposes, some insurance agencies may not cover the cost; they will be covered only if certain criteria are met.  It is better to consult them before undergoing the surgery to revise the scars. If the scar revision is done to improve normal bodily functions (like surgery to improve muscles corrupted by scar tissue. Or lack of normal movement experienced due to operations like mastectomy) then the insurance companies may cover the procedure and pay insurance money.

Detailed discussion with the plastic surgeons and the insurance companies will only reveal the actual cost of the procedure. The price for scar revision depend on the size of the scar and the complexity of the repair. Normally it could be anything between $ 300 to 5,000.
