When it comes to the chemical peel there are several things that all of the peel variations have in common. Of all the similarities the one that stands out the most is that of the acids that are used in the treatments. One of the acids that are available is the one that is used in the phenol chemical peel. This phenol is a toxic chemical and should you over expose your skin to this chemical then there are some serious heath risks associated with its use. It is for this reason that the phenol chemical peel is not made as an over the counter chemical peel like that of the alpha hydroxy chemical peels. The phenol chemical peel needs to be performed by a licensed surgeon who has experience with performing chemical peels as well as being certified to do so. Failure to use a physician of this nature could result in some serious health risks.
The phenol chemical peel will be performed in a controlled environment like at a hospital as it needs to be monitored to ensure that it is not penetrating to deeply into the epidermis. The phenol chemical peel also requires the use of an anesthetic whereas the others generally do not. The good news is that the phenol chemical peel is of course an outpatient procedure but it does need an experienced professional leading the treatment.
While the phenol chemical peel treatment only takes about an hour it can take up to two weeks just for recuperation from the treatment. Verses the strength of the other acids used in chemical peels, the phenol chemical peel also has some of the best reported results. There is also a greater chance of risks and complications associated with a phenol chemical peel versus the other chemical peel procedures.
The recovery period after having undergone a phenol chemical peel is about 2 to 3 weeks in time as it takes this long for the skin to start re-growing. Up until the recovery period has ended the skin will feel tight and it will be puffy and red. There is also a chance that this raw skin could weep so it is important to keep the treated area kept clean of any fluids so as to prevent crusty formations on it. On a final note remember that the skin is raw and exposed and no longer contains any of the body’s natural defenses against the harmful effects of the sun’s rays so make sure you keep the treated are covered up and if possible, coated with SPF 30. |
