One of the prized possessions of a woman are the nipples on her breasts. Though she may not be displaying it to all and sundry, yet she herself would like to be a perfect specimen with regard to this part of her anatomy. Many women (and men, too) are born with abnormal nipples, which may not cause any problems except cosmetic ones. The nipples may be large and protruding, which become worse during puberty. Or they may be flat and inverted, which may pose problems during breastfeeding. They may also be hanging which may look ungainly. This may happen due to ageing or excessive weight.
The causes of such problematic nipples are many. Such structures may be hereditary and run in the family. They may even be due to some problem or infection. Cancer or surgical scars may cause nipples to retract. People try to nurse them back to normalcy using massaging techniques or nipple piercing where a piece of jewelry hanging from the nipples may cause them to protrude. Nipple shields or cups can also be used to make them become normal.
During pregnancy many doctors advise their patients to bring out their nipples if they are flat so that breastfeeding the baby becomes easier. This practice is however not followed now as doctors feel that even inverted or flat nipples don’t pose problems while breastfeeding. Babies latch on to the entire area of the areola and the nipples. Hence a flat or inverted nipple poses no problem unless the milk ducts are affected.
The best nipple correction can be done through surgery. An experienced and Board certified plastic surgeon may perform the procedure which will correct the nipples of a man or a woman and make them normal and appealing. The surgery itself is simple, lasting for about half an hour and needing light anesthesia. Small incisions are made and the nipple structured to suit the patient. The recovery period too is fairly less. Just a couple of days of rest and slow resumption of normal work till full recovery is all that is needed.
After the operation the nipples may be bruised, swollen or painful. The doctor would have given medication to cure all these problems. The success rate of these surgeries is very high and the recovery period is less. Within a week the sutures of the operation would have been removed and the patient may be allowed to resume work and duties without any problems. The nipples and the breast will become normal very soon. |
