The breasts of a man and a woman have two parts-the areola and the nipples. The areola is about 4.5 cms in diameter and is dark red or brown. The nipples are slightly elongated and are at the center of the areola. The nipples may be around five to ten mms in length. Millions of men and women suffer from abnormalities of the nipples or the areolas. They may have inverted or flat nipples which may be congenital or due to some reason like too much fatty tissue or even cancer. It can also be due to a previous operation scar or some tumor.
Some people may have enlarged or extended nipples which are congenital or a result of breastfeeding. They may have puffy, enlarged and discolored areolas. Sometimes the nipples may be asymmetrical or too protruding causing embarrassment. The person suffering from such abnormality may feel ashamed or conscious of their bodies. These conditions may affect breast function and nipple sensation and may have a negative effect on women about their breasts. They may want to correct the problem and would like to go in for surgery as that is the only sure method of correcting a shapeless nipple.
If the nipples are retracted, flat or inverted, physical activities like massaging the nipples during pregnancy or lactation, using breast pumps or nipple shields may help. Sometimes nipple piercing also helps an inverted or flat nipple to become elongated and normal. Every year millions of people undergo corrective surgery for nipples and complications are infrequent. The surgeries are successful and the patients do not experience any major problems after the surgery. Most are happy with the results.
If nipples are long and unshapely, a simple operation can help it. Nipple reduction is done to reshape the nipples or reduce the areola as some women have nipples, which fold over or hang down. This can be due to a woman’s development or may be a side effect of breastfeeding. A nipple correction solves many such problems. It is a simple corrective surgery and takes place under local anesthesia. Small incisions are made and the nipples are corrected. The surgery may leave no visible scar. There are surgeries where the milk ducts are preserved, and hence the patients can breastfeed her child after the nipples have recovered.
Sometimes ageing or losing weight suddenly may cause the breasts to sag and the nipples to hang down. A breast lift or nipple lift is the answer to this problem. |
