The exposed parts of a person’s body are very important and call for a lot of attention. One of the exposed parts is the neck. Long and slim necks have been in vogue and heavy, layered and fat necks are not appreciated. Many people are very conscious of their looks and like to contour their bodies according to popular trends. To make the neck beautiful and get rid of the layers, the fat and the loose skin, one needs to go in for neck lift or platsysmaplasty. This is quite a common form of plastic surgery.
Once the decision to have a neck lift is made, one should research for the best possible surgeon and discuss with him the pros and cons of the procedure. The surgery takes three to five hours depending upon the type of operation. Sometimes neck lift is done along with a face and/or chins lift and in that case may take longer. However, one should be in good physical and mental health before going in for surgery. Smokers should quit smoking and medicines should be minimized after consultation with the surgeon. They should not interfere with the operation.
On the day of the operation the patient should wear loose clothes so that removing them after the operation is not difficult. One has to remember that there would be a bandage around the neck, which will be quite thick. The operation is done under general anesthesia though one can opt for sedation and local anesthesia. It depends upon the patient and the doctor. An incision is made below or behind the ear and the operation is done through it. Sometimes one more incision below the chin is also made.
Liposuction may be used to remove excess fat. The extra skin is clipped off and the muscles tightened. The operation site is then sutured. The patient will be hospitalized for a couple of days. He has to be careful not to move his neck much, should take care that there is no infection or fever. And he should rest his head on a comfortable pillow. The scars will be there and there may be some swelling, redness or pain, which will go away with medication. His neck will be back to normal with an improved look in about ten to twelve weeks.
The neck lift cost is around $3000 to $15000 depending upon whether the neck lift is done by itself or in combination with a face-lift and/or chin lift. There may not be an insurance cover, as most insurance companies do not include cosmetic surgery in its list. However if done on medical grounds insurance coverage may be there.
