Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck is a smaller and less dramatic form of abdominoplasty which is done to improve the appearance of the stomach of the patient. Like the normal tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck is also done to remove excess fat and skin, to tighten the abdominal muscles and to present a smoother and more acceptable abdomen. When the need for abdominoplasty is not as serious as the traditional tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck is done.

Generally, after a delivery, the abdominal muscles of the mother may become lax and the patient needs to tighten them through a surgical procedure. The uterus enlarges and after the baby is delivered, the muscles may not return back to the normal pre pregnancy state. The bulge in these cases is just below the belly button. After a caesarian section also, an unsightly scar of the operation may remain, necessitating the mini tummy tuck procedure. Pockets of fat look ungainly and ugly.

In the mini tummy tuck the excess fat and bulge below the navel is removed surgically. A smaller incision just above the pubic part is made (about 10 to 15 cms) and liposuction performed to remove and drain off the fat. The navel may be relocated and structured to get a better appearance. The wound is closed mad sutures used. A tube may be inserted to drain off the excess liquid, which may be collected in the operated area.

The procedure itself can be done under total or local anesthesia. The patient may be discharged in a day or two after the operation. It may also be done on an out patient basis. The scar of the operation generally disappears after a few weeks and restarting of diet control and the exercises ensure that the resulting appearance of the abdomen remains stable. The patient needs to have a companion to drive him home after the operation. He needs someone with him for at least a couple of days when the stomach may feel bloated or tender. He should not take undue strain and keep everything like the telephone, medicines, food, water and the like at arm’s length so that he does not need to get up too often. Though the operation is safe, it is an emotional experience.

Abdominoplasty is the sixth most popular operation in the US and is comparatively safe and without risk.
