Microdermabrasion

The microdermabrasion procedure which may also be commonly known as the microderm is basically a popular procedure in the cosmetic field which is most commonly available through a wide variety of day spas, medical spas as well as cosmetic surgery clinic around the nation. In this procedure the stratum corneum which is the outermost layer of skin, most of which is of course already dead, is removed through the process of sanding the skin. This can be accomplished through a variety of techniques which are available to the practitioners of this cosmetic procedure. These variations in methods to perform a microdermabrasion can include a jet of crystals made from either zinc or aluminum oxide, a variety of organic particles finely crushed or even a rough surface tool like an electric sander.

The procedure of microdermabrasion is used for a variety of skin ailments like skin that has been damaged by the sun, scars and even dark spots which are discolorations of the skin’s own pigmenting capabilities. Unlike dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, thus the term micro, while still is performed under general anesthesia is usually not as painful as the full dermabrasion. It is highly popular in helping to remove raised scars on the skin but unfortunately in the case of the scar being sunken the microdermabrasion usually cannot remedy them. Furthermore microdermabrasion is very helpful for those who have had to undergo a traumatic acne period which has resulted in acne scaring and pits.

While the full scale dermabrasion may use sandpaper and an electric sander, the microdermabrasion uses abrasive crystals which are usually zinc oxide or aluminum oxide in material. There are many microdermabrasion machines currently available for use in a variety of spas so as the spa can do a microdermabrasion in conjunction with a variety of other skin treatments.

In general, the newer microdermabrasion systems can be broken down into two categories with the first being the crystals and the second being diamonds. While the crystal microdermabrasion system is the most commonly available, the process in which the skin is quite literally blasted away has begun to force potential patients into other alternatives. One of these such alternatives is the diamond system which instead of sand blasting the skin with crystals, a machine with a diamond tip is used to gently remove the old dead skin from an area. Regardless of the system used, both feature the ability to vacuum the dead skin cells away as they are removed from the epidermis.
