Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is done to remove the excess fat from under the eyes and to give the person a younger look. Ugly bags under the eyes occur with age, stress or with too much exposure to the sun. Younger people may suffer from puffiness giving them a tired look. Sometimes heredity or congenital fat deposits may cause the person to look haggard. All this can be corrected and improved by lower eyelid surgery.
The most important thing is to seek a reputed board certified surgeon who can be trusted and whom the patient can have confidence in. In the pre operative visits all doubts can be cleared, full knowledge of the procedure, what to expect, what will the outcome be, what risks are there and what are the costs involved can be thoroughly discussed and decided. The surgeon will discuss what changes the patient would like, explain the options available and the limitations. A full medical history will have to be told and he will examine the fat around the lower eyelids and inform the patient about the procedure.
Though a lower eye lid surgery can make a remarkable change in the appearance of the face, removing looks of tiredness and age, it is important to know that this will not remove dark circles, fine lines or wrinkles around the eyes or alter sagging eyebrows. These can be corrected by combining this procedure with others. Lower eyelid surgery can be combined with upper eyelid blepharoplasty or a facelift or a forehead lift and can be done using lasers or chemical resurfacing.
An anesthesia will be administered and an incision made along the lash line or the smile crease. Excess fat and skin are then removed and fine sutures are used to close the incision. If there is a pocket of fat beneath the lower eyelids but no loose skin, the surgeon may recommend transconjuctival blepharoplasty where the incision will be made inside the lower eyelid leaving no scar behind. This is usually performed on younger patients. It does not tighten the skin but reduces the puffiness in the lower eyelid region. The procedure may take one to three hours. It can be done on an outpatient basis and one need not stay in the hospital unless the patient wants to or the doctor recommends it. There may be a slight tightening or slight pain or itchiness after the operation. Mild painkillers can be taken to relieve it. The recovery period is just about a week. Care has to be taken not to overstrain the eyes during this period.
