Lip Reduction Recovery Time

When a person has heavy and ungainly lips, he is conscious of it. The lips may be thick and fat. Most people in this condition would like to go in for lip reduction surgery. Lip reduction surgery is simple, easy and quick. It barely takes about half an hour for an expert surgeon to perform it.

What is important is the choice of the surgeon and the discussion prior to going in for the procedure. The surgeon selected should be reliable, experienced and Board certified. The patient should have confidence in him which is where half the battle is won. He should be able to discuss the procedure to be undergone in great detail so that neither the patient nor the doctor has any doubts of what is to be done.

The procedure consists of making incisions in the inside of the lips, removing the extra tissues and fat responsible for the heaviness of the lips, suturing them and then giving he patient time for recovery. After the operation the patient may take some time to recover from the anesthesia, which may make him feel groggy. The patient need not stay in the hospital but needs to have someone to drive him home and look after him for at least four hours. The patient should take adequate rest and lie down with his head higher than his body. He should take note of the diet prescribed by the doctor and follow it. He should not talk too much nor should he tongue the wound. He may feel bruised, tired, swollen, or uncomfortable but this will all disappear soon with or without medication. He shod not talk for a couple of days at least. If his lips are swollen even after three days he should not panic but instead consult the doctor. Sometimes he may go into depression and it is quite a normal thing and there is no cause for worry.

It takes about a week for the doctor to remove the stitches if they are the non-absorbable kind. It takes about two weeks for the lip size to become normal and a few more weeks for the full effect of the surgery to become visible. If the surgery is successful, then the lips will remain that way and will not return to the earlier size and shape. However he should be prepared for asymmetry or similar side effect.
