There are numerous liposuction procedures. These are some of the types of liposuction that is in use today:

2. Tumescent liposuction
3. Ultrasound assisted liposuction
4. Water assisted liposuction

Dependent on the procedure chosen by the patient, there are several advantages and disadvantages associated with each procedure. Surgeons will also tell you which procedure is best suited for the body area been targeted by you.

The time taken by the surgeon to complete the liposuction surgery is dependent on the body area been targeted. This means that if the area has been targeted is the thighs, buttocks or the abdomen, where the fat is fat, the time taken is usually one to two hours. But if the operation has to be done for a completed area such as the face or the neck where number of arteries and veins are there. The procedure can a much longer time. Also if a number of body areas are been targeted, then the duration of the surgery will increase. Depending upon the complexity and the risk factor of the surgery, the costs may also increase.

The use of anesthesia on patients makes them relaxed. On the day of the surgery, the patient is stressed out and the doctor wouldn’t like the patient to get all jittery. Depending on the surgical procedure deemed fit by the doctor, local or general anesthesia can be used. The advantage of local anesthesia is that the patient is awake and can provide feedback during the operation to the doctor; also the recovery time is less. Normally doctors advise the patient to stay overnight in order to monitor the health of the patient and deal with any complications, if they happen.

Liposuction procedures can be performed as an in patient or an out patient. Depending on the type and the complexity of the operation, the operation can be performed as an in patient or out patient operations. Normally when local anesthesia is administered, the patient is allowed to go back home. In case general anesthesia is administered, the patient is admitted as an in patient. The patient would have to spend at least one day in the hospital.

Depending on the technique used by the surgeons, all patients are advised on the check up within a week. They can also return to desk jobs within 3 days after the completion of the operation. Swelling can take about 4-6 weeks to come down. The precise care and precautions would be given by the surgeon, dependent on patient and the procedure undertaken.
