The cosmetic surgery that can remove fat from various parts of the body is known as Liposuction. There are various other names for liposuction. It’s also known as lipoplasty, liposculpture or suction lipectomy. It has been used by surgeons all over the world to sculpt bodies and make the body fat disappear. For those who can’t or are unwilling to go on a diet or exercise can use liposuction and get rid of their fat.
It can help in body contouring but isn’t without its inherent risks. Normally in a single session of liposuction the doctor can remove up to 10 pounds or approximately 5 kgs of fat from the desired area of the body. Though the actual fat loss will depend on the surgeon, the liposuction procedure and the patient.
The decision for undergoing liposuction rests equally with the doctor and the patient. Sometimes if a surgeon takes out too much fat or over suctions an area, then there may be a dent in the skin. In fact the liposuction surgery becomes riskier as more fat is removed. There is no conclusive proof that one can loose 50 pounds weight at a single sitting. In fact contouring of the body can make the weight loss seem more than it is actually. In the 1960’s the first liposuction surgeries were performed, but they were very primitive and caused significant bleeding and morbidity. The countering was also not even.
In the last two years, the liposuction surgery has become more precise. Two FDA approved technologies using laser at high frequency and cold laser at low frequency are been used. This means that less invasive surgery is required and the cannula can also be directed precisely. For the patients it means less recovery time, less tissue trauma and less use of compression girdles as compared with other methods of liposuction.
Liposuction can be performed on almost any part of the body, but the preferred area for women are the abdomen and the thighs, while for the men, the areas most preferred are the abdomen and flanks.
Liposculpture is for those who are medically fit over 18 years of age. Those who want to undergo lipoplasty should be in fit physical condition and it’s advisable that they have given up smoking. Those who suffer from diabetes, heart problems and other circulation problems can’t participate in the surgery as it become quite risky.
Moreover it’s the last option that should be exercised after a person has tried to cut down the weight by diet control and exercising. In fact those who are old (50 years and above) are advised by their doctors to also go for a tuck (like a tummy tuck), since the elasticity of the skin is less and it doesn’t wrap around the new body as it does for younger people.
Liposuction is no longer as risky as it used to be even a decade ago. The incisions are smaller and the recovery and healing time have shortened. This has helped the patients get back to their regular life faster with a fitter and lean body. The restrictions may be few as desired by the doctor. With the latest laser assisted methods of liposculpture, it has made life simpler for everyone.
