If boys or men develop breasts like women, it is certainly a cause for embarrassment and one cannot blame the people for feeling so. They can be a butt of ridicule or joke and would not like to go through life with large or hanging breasts. The happy news is that there is a cure for this condition which is quite a successful one.
In most cases the problem corrects itself and no treatment needs to be done. However if oversized breasts in men occur, then the patient should consult his doctor to find its cause. It can be simply due to overweight. This can be treated easily by dieting and exercising when the excess fat will be controlled. Sometimes gynecomastia may be caused by certain medicines or drugs or overuse of them. In such cases the patient needs to stop the medicines or drugs that he has been taking and change to a different medication, under the guidance of a doctor. If it is due to hormone imbalance, then hormonal corrective methods need to be used. If it is due to tumor, some growth or related to some disease, one has to treat the underlying problem before tackling the gynecomastia. Sometimes only one breast is affected.
Generally these methods succeed and the patient is satisfied. However sometimes surgery is the only recourse to solve the problem. Surgery has its natural side effects and risks, which the surgeon has to tell the patient and get his consent before putting him under the scalpel.
The surgeon may remove the excess fat through liposuction, which is done under local or full anesthesia and takes a couple hours. If fat is not removed by this method then it has to be cut and incised. The surgeon will decide what measures to take for the treatment of gynecomastia.
Once surgery is decided and implemented, the patient has to follow the instructions of the surgeon properly so that the wound heals properly without any infection, swelling, pain or bleeding. He has to see to it that the area is not hurt or stretched till it heals properly. Generally gynecomastia does not return after surgery. Gynecomastia surgery has a high percentage of success rates. But if, by some chance, the problem returns, then a corrective surgery can be done and the patient can go back satisfied with the result and be free of embarrassment and ridicule. |
