Gynecomastia Causes

There are several reasons for male breast growth. Gynecomastia means womanlike, i.e., men having breasts like women. In some men, both breasts grow. Sometimes equally and sometimes one is different from the other.  It occurs mostly during puberty due to hormonal changes. In old age it may be the result of fatty tissues collecting in the chest area. In most of the cases there is no known cause for male breast growth. The cause can be medical in some cases and sometimes it’s in the genes or hormonal. There are some medicines and drugs, which cause the fatty tissue in the breasts to increase and grow. Stopping such medicines may reduce the size of the breast.

The cause can be developmental in others. It may be birth related, it may happen during puberty or adolescence and it may occur in old age. Some baby boys show a marked increase in breasts size.  The cause may also be drug or medicine related. Hypogonadism is decreased androgen hormones or increased resistance to androgen. Gynecomastia may be primary, acquired or congenital. It can also be secondary. If there has been any trauma or infection, this condition may happen. Sometimes torsion, when the testicles get twisted can also result in gynecomastia. It may also be due to radiation or mumps. Sometimes chemotherapy also causes it. If there is secretion of milk, then the owner may really feel very embarrassed and may do anything to cure himself of this condition.

Some men inherit this kind of body where the breasts are large and pendulous. Low testicular function also causes it. Failure of pituitary glands may cause this condition in males. Other causes of increased breast size in males may be renal failure where the testicles fail, or if the estrogen and testosterone binding gets changed. Alcoholism or chest wall trauma has also been known to be the cause of this condition.

There may be congenital disorders which cause gynecomastia. Sometimes cells are unable to respond properly to circulating androgens. Sometimes enzyme defects of testosterone may cause this or if the testes regress during the growth of the fetus in the uterus, it may cause breast enlargement in adult life. Obesity, psychological stress, or spinal cord injury may also affect the breasts and cause them to grow abnormally and become enlarged in men.

Sometimes there are no known causes for gynecomastia. However surgical intervention can definitely cure the condition and normally the results are good.
