It is very embarrassing when adolescent boys or men have enlarged breasts. Many resent it, considering it is a very personal problem. But the fact remains that it is not a normal situation and having breasts in men is abnormal. It is not an illness and there are no problems associated with it. However, if one breast is considerably heavier than the other, thorough investigation needs to be done.
Gynecomastia is the development of abnormally large breasts in men, which may sometimes even secrete milk, much to the embarrassment of the person. It can happen to men at any age, in newborn babies, in adolescents or even in elderly men. In the Greek language, gyne means a woman and mastos means breast. In most of the cases, the problem resolves by itself in a few months time. If it is due to some medicines or some other chemicals or substances entering the body, it may go away when these medicines are stopped. This problem could mainly be due to excess weight, in which case the problem may be solved if the person loses weight.
There can also be several other reasons for this development. It can be some underlying problem like imbalance in hormones, steroid abuse, tumors, genetic disorders, side effects of some medicines, ageing, some liver disease or using stuff like marijuana (though this is not proven). It can even be idiopathic, i.e., having no known cause for this problem. Sometimes rubbing the nipples with some herbs continuously may also produce large mammary glands as they may contain some ingredients, which may lead to this.
Application of products containing lavender and tea tree oils with some unidentified ingredients in some cases may also cause gynecomastia as they contain estrogenic and anti androgenic activity. This again, has not been proven. The doctor should give the patient a thorough physical test. If it is not due to the above-mentioned reasons or heredity, the only solution is a surgical procedure to remove these glands. Surgical removal will definitely control the problem and restore manliness and confidence of the patient.
Surgically removing the breasts is done after administering anesthesia. It does have some risks and one has to be very careful. The operation may result in a permanent solution unless the initial problem was because of medication. In which case, a repeat of the medicines may lead to a recurrence of the problem. |
