Glycolic Chemical Peel


The glycolic chemical peel uses glycolic acid to revitalize the skin. This glycolic acid is a member of the alpha hydroxy acid family and is composed mostly of sugar cane. In general this acid is mixed with vinegar and fruit extracts as a means of diluting it and making it safer for use on the skin. There are many different uses for the glycolic acid but the most common is for skin and personal care products. This glycolic acid helps to improve the appearance of the skin through the minimization of wrinkles as well as remedying the skin of skin damage, large pores as well as acne scarring.

In the glycolic chemical peel, the surgeon will first prepare the procedure and then will apply it to the skin and allow it to sit there until the end of the procedure. In many cases there will be a blue dye that will be utilized as a signal for the surgeon to know when the glycolic chemical peel has penetrated the skin deep enough to finish the treatment. Once this determination has been made the surgeon will clean up the treatment area making sure that there are no acid or other chemicals left which could carry certain risks associated with them.

Once the procedure has been completed, the surgeon will sit you down and make sure you understand what to expect during the recovery period. This recovery period can include things like weeping skin and even redness and swelling. The amounts of each that you are likely to see depend on both your skin type as well as the type of treatment that you received. Most of the side effects like the swelling and redness will generally disappear after about a week or so, but they can last more than a month after the treatment has been completed.

It is important to make sure that the person who will be performing the glycolic chemical peel is not only licensed but is also certified and has plenty of experience in performing glycolic chemical peels. The risks associated with the glycolic chemical peel can be severe if performed by an inexperienced profession should he or she leave the acid in contact with the skin for too long of a time period.
