A good diet can help loose the weight quicker as well as rebuild the lost muscle mass from the rapid weight loss. In order to follow this stringent diet, one will get use to making their own recipes. The bariatric surgery’s diet is based on various stages and is designed to help you not only recover from the procedure but to also recover from the years of bad habit which has led to your weight issue to begin with.

Immediately following you bariatric surgery you will only be able to ingest clear liquids. At first these liquids will consist of water which the body needs to survive and will generally move towards watered down fruit juices and clear bullion broths. The whole point of the liquid diet phase it that you should be able to see through the material you are ingesting. This can even include sugar free gelatin and colas which are both sugar free and carbonation free.

Within about a 1 week’s time period you will be able to move on to the second phase which is the full liquid diet. In this you can begin to ingest shakes of various types. These liquid meals will consist of soups, protein shakes, yogurt and milk products assuming that you did not develop a new intolerance to dairy products.

The next phase is a start to return to normalcy as you will soon be able to ingest pureed foods. This phase will start about 2 weeks after the complete liquid diet phase but it should be important to note that you should not rush the phases as it may cause some serious side effects.

About 5 or 6 week preceding your bariatric surgery you will finally be able to return to whole foods that you can chew. Anyone who has undergone a bariatric surgery will state how they miss using their jaw to chew, the feeling of being able to chew your own food may be overwhelming and it is important to not eat to quickly. You will want to avoid tough meats as well as vegetables that are fibrous and even breads. These should be low in fat and high in protein. The main reason for eating slowly is that your stomach is about the size of an egg and it only takes you eating 1 more spoon then will fit to cause you some serious pain. By eating slowly you will be more able to judge if you can ingest that next spoonful of food.
