A forehead lift, otherwise known as brow lift, is one of the oldest plastic surgery procedures to reduce the visible signs of aging. It aims to raise your eyebrows to a higher position to help soften some of your horizontal forehead wrinkles, lessen the scowl lines between your eyebrows, and improve your lateral hoods which are the droopy skin hanging over the outside corners of your eyes.
These are the most problematic areas when it comes to aging because having these wrinkles, lines, and droopy skin makes one look furious, unapproachable, problematic, unfriendly, and angry. Others may feel unwelcome when they’re talking to you even if you are making them as comfortable as they can be around you. Just think about your grandchildren who do not want to be near you because you look scary. By having the age lines, you will be treated differently by people around you. You don’t want that to happen, do you?
The answer to your situation right now is a forehead lift surgery. But which one of the three types should you choose? Let us thoroughly discuss each one so that you can determine which procedure is the best solution for your problem. There are three commonly used techniques in forehead lift surgery. The three types are coronal lift, endoscopic lift, and subcutaneous lift.
The coronal forehead lift is the oldest and most reliable technique in forehead lift surgery. During your procedure, your plastic surgeon will make an incision from ear to ear across the top of your head. Your surgeon will then make alterations of the muscles such as the frontalis, procerus, and corrugators which is the main cause of horizontal forehead wrinkles and scowling. After the alterations of muscles, you surgeon will remove about one to two centimeters of your scalp and stitch the remaining scalp together.
You will feel numbness on top of your head that will last about six months before any actual sensation returns. It will also raise your hairline which conceals the scars associated with the procedure. One of the biggest advantages of this procedure is that there is no need for any follow up procedures even as you continue aging. The results can be permanent indeed.
The endoscopic forehead lift uses an endoscope to aid the plastic surgeon in performing the procedure. This is the newest addition to the forehead lift procedure which only started in 1995. The surgery involves making four to six short incisions, about an inch long, behind you hairline which will be used to insert the endoscope. Other arms on the endoscope instrument have actual surgical tools that will perform most of the procedure such as cutting and grasping. The endoscope, guided and monitored by your surgeon, uses a fixation device known as an Endotine. It is a kind of an implant that hangs and affixes some of your skin into drill holes in the skull.
Your surgeon will free some tissues of your forehead from your skull and will lift them upward and incorporate them onto the Endotines to hold them in place. The Endotines will be absorbed by the body in about four to seven months after the procedure and your repositioned forehead tissues will heal on its new position in about one to two months. The longevity of the result of this forehead lift procedure is still uncertain because it is new.
The subcutaneous forehead lift involves making an incision across the top of your forehead where your hairline begins. The muscle alterations done on the coronal forehead lift can also be accomplished through this operation. The excess skin causing your wrinkles and age lines will be removed by your surgeon. Your hairline will not be moved higher unlike the other two techniques since the incision is made where your hairline starts. The disadvantage of this procedure is that you have to wear your hair forward to conceal the scar across your forehead.
