As a person ages, wrinkles and creases appear on the body and the face. They may appear sometimes even before old age. A forehead lift is a procedure which minimizes the creases and wrinkles on the forehead and also those appearing high up on the bridge of the nose and gives the face a smooth look. It can improve the position of the sagging brow and raise them to a more youthful position. It is a very personal decision. A forehead lift may also include eyelid surgery or a facelift to totally rejuvenate the person’s appearance.
The procedure can be done on an outpatient basis but one has to do some research and find out the best possible surgeon for the plastic surgery on whom one has trust and faith. After the decision to go ahead with the forehead lift, there will be certain tests and advice on medications and smoking. Also, one must be physically healthy, and mentally prepared to undergo this. The surgeon will discuss in detail the procedure, what to expect and the recovery process so that the patient is fully aware of what is going on and can make decisions regarding the procedure, the anesthesia and also know the risks involved.
The brow lift can be done using an endoscope and special instruments. The incisions are made within the hairline so that they are not visible to the naked eye after the procedure. Or they may be made along the normal lines of the eyelid, in the case of eyelid lift, to raise the sagging brow. The tissues and muscles may be removed or altered or tightened, depending on the extent of sagging. The incisions are then closed with removable or absorbable sutures, skin adhesives or some device. The forehead may be taped or bandaged loosely; a tiny tube may be left to drain any fluids.
The patient has to follow the physician’s instructions very carefully for a speedy and smooth recovery. He has to take care that the incisions are not subjected to too much force or motion or abrasion so that they heal normally. Some external medicines and some oral medicines may be prescribed to aid the healing process, prevent infection and damage. There may be some swelling, some redness and some soreness, which will gradually reduce with time. It may take a few weeks for complete recovery and in some rare cases a few months for total recovery. However, after a few weeks cosmetics can camouflage the bruises.
The patient should take care not to expose the forehead and face to too much of sun as it may damage the good work done. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will keep the youthful and rejuvenated look possibly for the whole lifetime.
