Fat Transfer Recovery

When considering having a fat transfer procedure, the first thing you have to do is go to your preferred plastic surgeon for the initial consultation. Your surgeon will clearly set out what you can expect out of the procedure, like some risks and side effects, as well as what good it can do for you, which mainly consists of the positive attributes of the treatment.

Your plastic surgeon will ask you about your medical history to determine if there are any reasons why you shouldn’t undergo the fat transfer procedure. You will be properly informed about pre and post operative care you need to strictly follow. The pre-operative care usually involves stopping smoking and drinking for a few weeks before the procedure as well as avoiding some medications like aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

A fat transfer procedure, otherwise known as Liposculpture, can be done together with a Liposuction procedure. A fat transfer procedure involves extraction of fat from body parts that needed to tone down the excess fat bulge and injecting some of it to your body parts that needed the extra volume or fullness like sunken cheeks and thin lips. A liposuction surgery involves extraction of huge amounts of fat deposits from different parts of the body.

Your plastic surgeon will determine the kind of anesthetic needed for your procedure, whether local or general. The procedure can be done in an outpatient clinic if small areas of fat collection are needed, otherwise the procedure will be done in a hospital if there are large areas of fat extraction needed to be done. The fat is usually collected from problem fat-collection areas like the abdomen, buttocks, or thighs.

The collected fat is sometimes washed and prepared for injection in the depressed areas that needed enhancement. Small areas of facial fat transfer will be conducted using tiny needles to distribute the fat carefully and evenly just under the surface of the skin. The whole fat transfer procedure usually takes an hour.

After the procedure, a compression girdle may be required to be worn at the body parts where the fat was extracted from to avoid any loose skin from forming. If the fat transfer procedure involved facial fat transfer, the patient must wait at least 24 hours after the procedure before they can apply makeup. Swelling, numbness, and bruising may occur between one to seven days depending on the area injected with fat. You will also be required to take your body temperature regularly because a slight elevation of your temperature could mean infection. Patients can get back to work after a day or a week after the surgery.
