Facial implants are one of the simplest procedures performed by licensed Plastic Surgeons. The main objective of any facial implant is to bring about improvement and enhancement of the basic structure of the face. By building up the cheeks, the chin, or the jaw, facial implants provide a more distinctive balance of a patient’s facial contour, thus greatly affecting one’s self esteem.
There are three kinds of facial implants, one that is done in the chin, another in the cheeks, and lastly in the jaw. Cheek implants can be done in two ways, internally or externally. Internal procedure for this facial implant places the implant material through an incision in the patient’s upper lip and the sutures used will dissolve. The external procedure places the implant through an incision in your lower eyelid and the sutures used will be removed in five to seven days. The cheek implants procedure usually takes 30 minutes to an hour.
Just like cheek implants, chin implants can also be done internally or externally. The incisions of the internal procedure are done along the lower lip inside the mouth, while the incisions of the external procedure are done just under the chin area. The small incisions create pockets for the insertion of the cheek implants. The sutures used vary depending on the chin implant procedure done on the patient. The plastic surgeon carefully selects the suitable shape and size of the implant during the procedure to achieve the desired enhancement of the patient’s appearance. The cheek implants operation may take about 30 minutes up to an hour.
The last kind of facial implant is the lower jaw implant wherein the surgery takes about one to two hours. Incisions are done internally inside the lower lip area. This is where the implants are placed and later secured by sutures that will dissolve within five to seven days.
When recovering from any facial implant, the patient needs proper and extra care to avoid any side effects or risks. If a facial implant moves slightly out of place, a follow up operation may be conducted to repair or replace the implant into its correct location. Infection is also a possibility just like with any kind of operation. If infection around the facial implant still persists even after an antibiotics treatment, a follow up operation might be in place for the temporary removal of the facial implant.
The aforementioned risks are often unheard of, but you should always take extra care after a facial implant operation to avoid any occurrence of these risks. Facial implants are indeed one of the most common procedures done nowadays. If you’re one of those who feel like a part of your face isn’t in harmony with all the other parts, you might want to consider undergoing a facial implant procedure. You might be surprised how well you carry yourself in any situation after a successful operation.
