Effects of Bariatric Surgery


The effects of a bariatric surgery can be both positive as well as negative. No matter how you look at it, bariatric surgery should be a last resort procedure when all other attempts at loosing the weight have failed. With the pros and cons associated with a bariatric surgery at hand, one should make the decision diligently as the risks associated with the procedure are severe. On overage, the lasting effects of a bariatric surgery is profound and the chances of death are below 1% but there is still some low laying clouds over head with regards to the procedure.

If a patient is capable of demonstrating that they have attempted all other options and still have failed to loose the weight, then chances are as long as you are more that 100 pounds overweight and are committed to the program and have a real desire to loose the weight then insurance companies are willing to pay for the procedure.

There are those who believe that the risks involved with a gastric bypass surgery are being taken too lightly. One must remember that in order to loose the weight, they are taking the chance of death or even a serious complication. 11% of all those who undergo the procedure have one or the other. That’s correct 11% out of which 1% will die and the remaining 10% will have a serious complication. Although these numbers are actually low compared to other abdominal surgeries, one has to remember that the gastric bypass is an elective procedure.

The advantages of electing to undergo a gastric bypass surgery include things like loosing the excess weight that you have. This does not mean that weight will stay gone. Any person who refuses to change their habits and instead opts to undergo the many complications associated with the procedure can in fact gain the weight back. By deciding to undergo a gastric bypass, you will have to say good bye to all of your favorite foods as you will never be able to eat them again. Its not that you can’t but if you do then chances are you will end up back in the same shape you were prior to the surgery.

It is important to take in as much information as you can about bariatric surgery as it can mean the difference between life and death.
