Double Eyelid Surgery

People normally go for eyelid surgery if fat deposits or if the extra skin causes wrinkles and problems. Double eyelid surgery is also called Asian blepharoplasty or Oriental blepharoplasty, though there are subtle differences. It is a type of a plastic surgery where the skin around the eye is reshaped. This cosmetic surgery creates an upper eyelid with a crease from an eyelid without crease.

Though both blepharoplasty and double eyelid surgery are similar, the former is an older version of the latter and has fine distinctions and differences. People in their late forties or fifties request double eyelid surgery to remove the fat, excess skin and to give the eyes a rejuvenated look. Double eyelid surgery is done on older people who feel that the wrinkles and skin hanging on their eyes give them an older look. There may not be too much stress on reshaping the eyelid crease in this operation.

The double eye lid procedure is the most common aesthetic procedure and creates a superior palpebral fold from a single eyelid. During the surgery, incisions are made on the upper eyelids in the crease so that there is minimal of visible scarring. In order to make the patient more comfortable, medications and anesthesia are administered just before the procedure. The extra fat deposits or the extra skin are removed and then the incision is closed with sutures which are absorbable so that they need not be removed after some days. The incision may also be closed with skin adhesives or tapes. The wound is covered with antibiotic cream and a dressing is put.

If there is any problem like swelling or discharge the doctor has to be informed. The dressing can be changed during an outpatient visit twice or thrice till the incision heals. The patient can go back to work and resume normal duties within a few days. Full results can be seen only after six weeks. The patient must have a realistic approach and not expect miracles. If the eye feels dry, eye drops can be prescribed to counteract it. Care has to be taken not to scratch or hurt the wound in any way. The surgical procedure is quite safe and the results are good.

However, now a less invasive procedure which is becoming more popular in facial plastic surgery is the use of botulinum toxin (Botox) dermabrasion and chemical peeling. Laser surgery which was invented in the 1980s is extensively used and it is easier, less scar forming and less abrasive.
