For decades there has been a variety of collagen creams available on the market for those who want to wipe away their wrinkles and fine lines. Seeing as though our skin’s elasticity is partially controlled by collagen and as we age that collagen starts to degrade then why would a collagen cream not work? Although there are many people that will specifically tell you that in now way shape or form will our skin absorb this collagen in a cream form; but if this is true then why can the skin absorb aspirin from a pain cream and not collagen from a youth defying cream? The skin does absorb the collagen, but unfortunately the rate in which the collagen is absorbed along with the minute amounts of this protein actually being in the beautifying cream means that there will most likely be little change. Furthermore collagen is also too large to be absorbed in the form it is used in the varying creams.
Do not let this hasten you as the majority of the newer collagen creams are using a hydrolyzed form of the collagen protein to assist in the skin’s absorption of the collagen. Whether or not our body’s own collagen matrix will accept this collagen is a different story though. These creams are also some of the best moisturizing creams available so even if they do not give your skin a more youthful appearance they can at least keep it moist
There are also the transdermal collagen products that are available but there is not currently enough evidence showing as to whether they actually work. If the collagen is absorbed like as in a meal of beef then the body’s digestive system converts the collagen into useful forms for our body, but if you are wanting it to be absorbed into the skin then this may not work for the simple fact then the body may or may not use it in it’s own skin matrix. Sometimes it is just easier to see a dermatologists and talk to them about the many collagen treatments available and which ones they would suggest to you to help you maintain your skin. |
