Collagen

Collagen is one of the biggest sources of protein in our bodies. In all mammals, collagen is considered to be one of the most abundant source of protein that can be found in every mammal. Furthermore collagen makes up more than 25% of the protein found in every body, both human and all of their mammal counterparts. Collagen is a long fibrous protein that is used as glue for almost every body part and it also works along side elastin to help keep our skin young and beautiful. Collagen can be found in things like our bones, muscles, organs and even in our tendons for the fact that it has an amazing tensile strength. Each one of our cells uses collagen to build the outer structure of the cell.

When someone hears the term, “sending the horse to the glue factory” it actually comes from reality in which the horse’s skin would be boiled down turning the collagen in their skin into a glue material. So the concept of collagen being the glue that holds our body together is not so far fetched.

Collagen has a plethora of uses both in the cosmetic surgery profession as well as various industrial uses. It is also such an important component in the body that latter on in life as we develop varying degrees of collagen deficiencies we can start to encounter things like osteoporosis.

The protein collagen can be used in cartilage therapy as well as reversing the results of aging. Yes that is correct; you see as we all age, the collagen in our skin begins to slowly degrade which eventually leads to wrinkles in the skin. It is this reason that various collagen treatments are very common in the cosmetic surgery profession. It is important that any person looks further into the uses of collagen and the aging process. Although supplementing the lost collagen in our body is important especially as we age it is important to note that these supplementations should be monitored by a licensed professional.
