There are various physical problems in people. The calf muscles are the leg muscles which help us in standing and walking properly. Sometimes people have congenital defects, i.e. they are born with defects, which make their calf muscles underdeveloped or asymmetrical or cause problems of imbalance. Sometimes illnesses like poliomyelitis make the legs underdeveloped and not capable of maintaining a person’s balance or allow them to walk normally. Or else even in a normal person both the calves of the legs may not be symmetrical. In all these cases a simple and popular calf implant may improve the situation.
A calf implant consists of inserting an implant in the lower leg muscles to improve the appearance and the functioning of the calves. Calf implants are plastic surgeries done only by expert surgeons who specialize in this type of implants. The implants used are soft, firm silicone ones and the surgery is done under total anesthesia.
A doctor or the patient himself can decide whether the calf implants are necessary. The surgery may be for cosmetic reasons to improve the body appearance and the leg contour. Or for medical reasons when a clubfoot or an illness like polio has affected the legs and rendered them almost worthless. A calf implant is not a medical procedure for correcting the fault but it is done to improve the condition, appearance and usefulness of the calves.
The doctor generally takes a complete medical history of the patient. Anyone in good health is a suitable candidate for this surgery. The calves are measured and the size of the implant decided and ordered. The implants are made of silicone and are inserted in the calves through an incision made behind the knee. The patient is put on his stomach and the incision is made. A pocket is created and the implant inserted in it. There may be one or two implants; it depends on the nature of the problem. The doctor then checks whether the implant gives a normal look and appearance and then stitches back the wound.
The patient is hospitalized for a day or two; during which time the doctor checks whether the implant is remaining in place, whether there is any infection or shift and whether the skin has stretched normally to cover the implant. He may be asked to walk for short while and rest with his legs lifted. In a week’s time the implant should adjust itself and the patient will be able to resume normal duties. The scar will disappear in four to six weeks and the patient will be back to normal in a couple of months with a better body and calves.
