Breast Scar Revision

To improve the appearance of breasts, many women go in for breast implantation. In this method, silicon gel (or any other suitable matter) implants are inserted in the breasts to enhance their appearance. Sometimes wrinkling or puckering or having too heavy or too light breasts may need plastic surgery to make them better. The procedure is surgical and the wound is closed using sutures. The human body produces collagen when some part is hurt or wounded and undergoes surgery. And after any type of surgery collagen is produced in sufficient quantity to heal. Producing collagen is a normal healing process but when collagen is produced excessively, it results in scarring.

The scar tissue is thick and rough. The scar formation depends upon the skin texture; the person’s response to healing, genetics, surroundings and many other factors. Therefore it is not possible to predict how the scar will be formed. Vitamin E may help lessen the scar or make it as light as possible. Actually Vitamin E only works on the scar tissue and makes the collagen fibers softer and flexible, thus making the whole scar lighter and softer. Sometimes injecting cortisone helps in revision of the scar.  Lasers also work wonders though they do not make the scar disappear completely. Oils and massages, gels or creams may also help to some extent. Medical products like Scar Guard also help.

If all these methods do not work, then it needs another surgery to lessen the scar. The patients should know that another operation might not remove the scar completely but only make it more acceptable. Scars can also be formed on the breast when some accident, wound or operation is performed. Sometimes infection may necessitate a breast operation. Cancer may result in mastectomy, which means that the breast will have to be removed. It is a major operation and painful where the entire breast (or part of it) is removed and the wound carefully sutured. Besides physical trauma, there will be emotional and cosmetic issues. The underlying muscles are also affected and physiotherapy may be necessary to improve the condition. A thick scar results after the operation, which can be minimized through breast scar revision. The operating surgeon will cut the scar tissue after administering a suitable anesthesia. The anesthesia may be local or general and the breast scar revision process takes place in a short time. The scar tissues are cut, removed and the wound is sutured again. The scar will form again but it may be in a lesser texture and intensity.
