Breast Reduction

Though the majority of women the world over, would like to have larger, firmer breasts, there is a sizeable group who want smaller breasts. These include women with heavy and pendulous breasts. They would like to reduce the size, not only because they are heavy but also because they cause a lot of other problems.

Heavy breasts may give rise to back pain, or shoulder pain. They may be uncomfortable while walking, running or jumping. They may cause the bra straps to rub against the skin causing abrasions. More importantly they may look incongruous with the rest of their body, especially if they have a small body build. Getting a correct bra of their size or getting suitable clothes, or different sized bikini top and briefs, may be a problem for women with heavier breasts.

More than 113,000 women have undergone breast reduction surgery in 2005 and it is reported that there is an increase of eleven percent the following year. Among all plastic surgeries, patients undergoing breast reduction are reported to have been the happiest and the most successful ones. Though generally it is performed on women, breast reduction is also performed on men who have large and embarrassing breasts. Such cases are fewer in number.

There are many methods of breast reduction. Liposuction is one where the excess fat is drained out through suction. This method may be uneven and may result in nipples remaining in their own place with the breast size reduced. This may leave the nipples out of shape, which may have to get reconstructed by surgery. Surgical procedures also can reduce the size of breasts. The performing surgeon will give pre-surgery information and discuss the procedure with the patient. Several types of surgery are done on an outpatient basis with full anesthesia to reduce the size of the breasts. The most popular and common ones are the inferior pedicle and vertical scar techniques. Minimum of incisions may be done on patients, which can be hidden or may result in minimum scarring which may become less visible with the passage of time.

These surgeries may also need another surgery for relocating the nipples and reducing the size of the areolas. Also they may render the breasts unfit for lactation and breast-feeding. Newer techniques can take care of this problem. There are non-surgical methods like medicines, which effectively reduce the breasts. Pills made from herbs are available in the market which guarantees results.
