Breast implants or breast augmentation is a surgical procedure where the appearance, the size and shape of a woman’s breasts are made to make them more pleasing and attractive. It consists of placing the implants inside the breasts as a supplement to the existing breasts. The operation lasts for an hour or two and the patient can resume normal work within a week. Most patients recover very fast and the incision scars disappear within six weeks. Immediately after the procedure, the breasts may have a heavy and unnatural look which will settle down within a week. There may be some swelling, bruising, pain or discomfort and rarely will there be any fluid discharge or bleeding.
The patient should be realistic and not expect a perfect breast appearance immediately after the operation. The breasts will be tender and sore and will be bandaged. The doctor may prescribe a special bra to hold the implants in place. If an underwire bra has to be used, it should be done under medical advice as this may cause some problems after the surgical procedure.
The breasts may look unnatural for some time till the implants settled down. Or they may look very obvious but again, this too will settle down soon. A temporary discomfort can be expected which can be alleviated by medication and pain killers. The discomfort will depend on the placement of the implant and its size. Larger the size more can be the discomfort. Also a woman who has breast fed her baby may have less discomfort as breast feeding leads to a stretch in muscles which is needed for an implant.
Internal stitches used are generally dissolvable while external ones can be removed after a week or so. Special bras will be recommended for a couple of weeks after which lacy bras can be used. If there is swelling or bruising due to the surgery, then cold compresses will correct the problems. If the bruises are enlarging or becoming firmer, then a doctor should be consulted as this may be an indication of hematoma or blood collection at that part. Things will be normal and the breasts look good and attractive within six to eight weeks.
