Breastfeeding With Implants

When a girl reaches puberty, nature ensures that her body is fit for child bearing and child rearing. Her breasts blossom, her hips take shape, she has pubic hair and her menses starts. By the time she is eighteen years of age, she is ready for child bearing. The main purpose of the breasts now is of lactation , to make enough milk for the new born baby till she is at least six months of age and ready for solid food.

Girls who are not satisfied with the size and shape of their breasts  go in for breast implants or breast augmentation. In this procedure implants are surgically introduced in the breast to give it a better assize and shape. While doing so, chances are that some blood vessels, and milk ducts may be damaged or hurt. The patient should know the extent of risk she is taking when undergoing breast implantation so that later on, if she wishes to breastfeed her baby, she must take care. A breast implant patient can definitely breastfeed her baby. The supply may be less than normal as the milk ducts may be affected or the implant may be putting pressure on them, thus reducing their efficiency.

If the operation has been done with an incision on the areola, the danger is much more as the incision might have hurt the area and damaged nerve cells. If the incision has been done under the breast or if the implant has been introduced from an incision in the armpit or naval or abdomen, then the chances of damage are less and breastfeeding is definitely a possibility.

Another fear of a breast implant patient wanting to breastfeed, is that the implant may leak and enter the milk, thus affecting the health of the baby. However experts are now of the opinion that if a saline implant ruptures or leaks, the saline will not cause any harm to the baby if it enters the milk stream. If a saline gel implant ruptures then experts say that there is no chance of the silicone gel molecule entering the bloodstream or the milk stream. So the patient can be free from tension if the implants rupture or leak.

The biggest fear is in the minds of the patients themselves who feel that they may not be able to breastfeed their children after an implant. Doctors agree that there is absolutely no danger if a patient wishes to breastfeed her child ( and it is advisable to do so) even after implantation. Most breast implants are placed under the muscle so that the milk ducts are not harmed during the surgery. However it is a surgery and may affect the milk ducts  by mistake though this is rare if the surgeon is experienced enough.
