Breast Augmentation Scars

With more and more women looking for ways to get a beautiful figure, breast augmentation has become very popular.

One of the main problems associated with surgery is scars. With the great advancement in the field of cosmetic surgery, many different techniques to minimize scarring are being used. The technique used varies from surgeon to surgeon and also depends on the patient.

These days scarless breast augmentation surgery has become very popular when using breast implants. The implant is inserted through the belly button. Just a small scar is left in the naval area. It is a quick surgery and allows for a quicker recovery and less pain than traditional breast augmentation. Scarless breast augmentation allows patients to return to a work environment within a couple days. It is considered to be a good option for those who cannot afford to take an extended amount of time off. But it does not work for patients who wish to reverse signs of ageing and hence need a breast lift too. This is because the implants can be placed only above the muscle in scarless breast augmentation. Also the patient needs to have enough breast tissue to cover the implants.

Other techniques to minimize scars are to hide them by making the incision under the breast, in the armpit, at the edge of the areola or at the edge of the nipple.

Even though recognized as permanent, when properly placed by a skilled surgeon the resulting scars will be as inconspicuous as it should be.

Noticeable scars are unavoidable in the case of breast reconstruction surgery done on mastectomy patients when tissue is taken from other parts of the body. The scars are usually fine and insignificant once it has healed.

Some times a scar may become raised and thick due to abnormal healing. This may have to be treated. Conventional invasive treatments include surgery, injected steroids and laser therapy. Applying silicone gel, topical steroids and polyurethane patches are the noninvasive methods of treatment. Scars can also be treated with alternative products like topical vitamin E creams, herbal extract creams and massage therapy.

To diminish the appearance of the scars it is recommended not to expose the incision to the sun for one year after surgery. Tanning worsens the appearance the scars. Keep the scars covered and always use a good sunscreen or sun block if exposed to sun. Apply a topical cream and massage the scar for at least a month after the breast augmentation surgery. Also avoid infection of the incisions.
