Asian Eyelid Surgery

The Asian eyelid surgery is a recent operation developed for people of Asian origin. It involves surgery of both the upper eyelids in an attempt to have suitable creases for a better appearance. Generally the ones who go in for this type of surgery are in their teens or early twenties and contrary to popular belief they do not undergo this operation to change their appearance to look like occidental people. In this technique the main goal is the creation of a new crease or enhancement of an improper or asymmetrical crease. There may not be any fat on the eye lids to be removed and the focus is on realignment of youthful internal eyelid structure. Some have puffy eyes and this procedure can cure this.

It is also known as the double eyelid surgery as both eyes are involved in the operation. It is a cosmetic surgery where the skin around the eye is reshaped. The Asian upper eyelids are different in structure from the European ones and the patients go in for this surgery to have a brighter eye look and to make applying the eyeliner easier. This surgery places a pretarsal crease in the Asian eyes that do not have it. In the present American society, this surgery is not done to westernize a person’s look and hence the surgeon should be careful in not modifying the patient’s ethnic look.

The upper eyelid crease can range from one mm to ten mm and many methods are used to create the double eyelid procedure-the full incision, partial incision to no incision methods. Each is different and has its own advantages depending on the patient’s anatomy and requests. Asian blepharoplasts are reported to be quite common in Taiwan and other parts of East Asia. There are some risks involved but if the procedure is done by a reputed experienced plastic surgeon, they are very safe. Care has to be taken to find a suitable surgeon to do this procedure. The patients have to inform the operating doctor of any illness, allergy, medications or drugs taken.

Studies show that the majority of patients are women in their mid adolescence. They experience difficulty in applying eyeliner and in some cases, where surgery is not done; they may even apply cellophane tapes to create folds on their eyelids as part of the daily makeup routine. There are a few male patients seen occasionally but they are slightly older.
