Arm Lift Recovery Time

An arm lift procedure redefines the shape and size of your flabby upper arms. The flabbiness of the upper arm area is caused by loose skin that can be resulted from excessive weight loss or the natural aging process. Brachioplasty or arm lift sculpts your upper arm to reveal a more toned arm. The incisions made will depend on the amount of the loose skin to be removed. If you only have mild loose skin, the incisions can be made only in the underarm area creating a significantly hidden scar. But if you have larger amount of loose skin, the incisions will be made from your underarm down to your elbow on the insides of your upper arm. This will create longer scar that can be visible when the upper arm is lifted.

The arm lift surgery usually takes one to two hours. After the surgery, you can go home straight away since brachioplasty is performed on an outpatient basis. You will be required to wear a protective sleeve-like wrapping at home after the surgery. This is a post operative compression garment worn to ensure proper healing and to minimize swelling. The incisions may also be applied with bandages and dressings to avoid any outside contact that may cause the risk of infection. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the patient’s skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect during the healing process.

Significant healing should be seen in about two weeks after the surgery. The swelling of the incision area will take about three to six months before it fully fades out. This is the longest aspect of the procedure to recover from.

You will be required to return to your plastic surgeon for suture removal in about two to three weeks after the surgery. The scars of the incisions will fade almost completely in six months to two years after the procedure.

You should avoid doing any strenuous activities for the first two weeks after the procedure so that your incision areas won’t be put under pressure. You should also take your prescribed medications as instructed by your plastic surgeon to avoid any surgical complications. You should be able to return to work after two weeks of recovery from your arm lift surgical procedure. Exercising can also be resumed but always start at a moderate pace working your way up to more strenuous exercises.
