After Gastric Bypass

After undergoing gastric bypass surgery you will first have to remain in the hospital for a recovery period in which you will be observed to be determines self sustaining. In other words you will stay in the hospital until you can prove that you will be able to care for yourself. Another factor on your hospital stay has to do with the type of procedure you have undergone. Persons who get a Lap-Band procedure will usually be dismissed within a few hours.

It is also important to not that it is not suggested for you to get pregnant for at least two years after having the bariatric surgery performed. By remembering that the bariatric surgery’s goal is for you to loose weight through the means of controlling the amount of nutrients your body can absorb means that until you are capable of sustaining your own needs for nutrition, you will not be able to supply the needs of a fetus.

You may also be placed on multivitamins and calcium supplement to help you recover and ensure you have the nutrients your body needs. You may also need to take in vitamin B-12 from time to time as well by the means of oral consumption or through an injection which is a lot easier.

Your entire lifestyle and diet will change as a result of the gastric bypass surgery and preparation for these changes is important. Remember that your stomach is the size of a large egg and you will not be able to just go to Mc Donald’s and order your dinner but rather throw it into a blender and that’s only if it is healthy and not on the “Do Not Eat” list.

Over the first year after the bariatric surgery you can expect to loose between 50% and 75% of your preoperative body weight and this will include both fat cells as well as muscle mass. The muscle mass loss will also mean a need for you to increase your protein consumption in order to rebuild that lost mass.

Most of all, you will have to commit your self to the surgery as you will be able to regain the weight should you fail to follow the dieting and exercise requirements.
